The son of the Kind, Rao Joghaji of Jodhpur left home to set up his own kingdom in the late 15th century. He was encouraged by the prophecy of a mystic woman, Karni Mata. She told that he would rule over a kingdom larger than his father’s kingdom. Thus in 1488, Rao Bikaji set up a fortified city which was named as Bikaner. The city of Bikaner became a cluster of 22 princely states. But in the end of 16th century, the Maharajas of Bikaner came under the Great Akbar’s diplomacy. Till the advent of the British in the 18th century, they remained as the Mugal allies.

With the upswing in its fortune, the city of Bikaner in 1866 became the first princely state to introduce electricity. When the British left India, this state was ruled by Maharaja Sadul Singhji. Apart from the royal family, the glorious city is known for its fairs and festivals, picnics, outings, temples and havelis.
