FORT CHANWA LUNI |
Maharaja Jaswant Singh II
Ruler of Jodhpur Marwar from
1876-1895 A.D is remembered
as the benign Monarch who
steered the administration
and economy of Marwar away
from chaos and instability
to a period of sustained
development and security and
justice for all. Amongst the
prominent civil servants in
this Ruler's coterie of
adminstrators, was a young
Charan by the name of
Kaviraj Muraridanji. He was
an astute politician and a
farsighted adminstrator. In
1894 Kaviraj Muraridanji
received in Jagir the little
known hamlet of Chanwa.
There he build an exquisite
little fortress Palace today
known as Fort Chanwa. In
1941, however the village of
Chanwa became "Khalsa" (
belonging to the State ) as,
ironically Muraridanji fell
victim to a law introduced
by him in the best interest
of Marwar, whereby feudal
estates lacking a male
successor and without a
recognized adoption in the
life time of the deceased
Jagirdar were automatically
resumed by the state, after
his death.
In the year 1948 Chanwa was
granted in "Jagir" to
Maharaja Dalip Singh, the
youngest son of Maharaja
Umaid Singh, However over
the years the Fortress sank
into years of neglect and
decay. In 1992 inspired by a
wave of successful
restorations to heritage
properties and encouraged by
the burgeoning tourism
traffic into western
Rajasthan Maharaj Dalip
Singh, the 24th generation
of direct descent from Rao
Jodha, ruler and founder of
Jodhpur in the 15the century
decided to throw open the
gates of Chanwa to these new
'invaders". Today Fort
Chanwa restored to its
pristine glory and charm by
its proud owners Maharaj
Dalip Singh & Rani Madhu
Devi, warmly welcome
travellers from distant
lands offering princely
hospitality in an inimitably
enchanting setting- a
Heritage Hotel in the finest
traditions. Fort Chanwa has
Forty Five authentically
renovated rooms ( with
attached bathrooms) each
different from the other.
Ourhonoured guests can
relish traditional
Rajasthani cuisine which is
specially prepared by cooks
who have served the family
through the generations.
Candle-light dinners with
folk musicians singing in
the background brings in
nostalgia and old world
charm.
Fort Chanwa, which is owned
by Maharaj Dalip Singhji,
the youngest son of Maharaja
Umaid Singhji, Maharaja of
Jodhpur, is a red sandstone
fortress at Luni , some 35
Kms from Jodhpur.
Tatler / Cunard
Travel Guide
" At 35 Km South West of
Jodhpur a fortress still
belonging to Jodhpur
Maharajah cousin's abandoned
for more than 100 years, its
decoration has been rethink
with a very good taste, we
even can say an exceptional
taste. The owner made mainly
work the artisans from his
village. Difficult to do
better. Have a drink at
sunset in the inner
courtyard, watching at the
red sandstones facades is a
great unforgettable moment.
The best rooms are around
the patio. Restaurant at the
same level than the rest.
Its worth the detour.
Reservation highly
recommended."

RAVLA KHEMPUR |
HISTORY:
The Ravla Khempur has a
passionate history of true
Mewari valour that dates
back to 1628 AD. An enemy,
in order to avenge the
killing of his brother,
plotted to assassinate the
young Prince Jagat Singh of
Mewar. His plans were
over-heard by Khemraj
Dadhivadia whilst he was
having his sword sharpened
in the market place. Khemraj
didn’t utter a word of what
he had heard to anyone and
left quietly. On the fateful
day when the young prince
was out hunting, the
would-be assassin charged up
towards him, intent on
murder. When the deadly
blade of the enemy’s sword
was inches away from the
prince, Khemraj leapt out
from nowhere, and with a
single stroke of his sword,
beheaded the attacker. To
honour this gallant act,
Mewar’s grateful Maharana
rewarded Khemraj Dadhivadia
with a village and named it
Khempur.

Nagaur which lies midway
between Jodhpur and Bikaner.
Hotel Overview:
The splendid creation of Rao
Karamsiji in 1523 was the
Khimsar Fort, which has
presently turned into a
residential hotel. The
Khimsar Fort is constructed
very close to the Thar
Desert. The Fort is of
yellow color and is one of
the most rare Rajasthani
architecture. In the
eighteenth century a ladies
compartment was built in the
fort, which was named as
Zenana. One of the

KUMBHALGARH |
Its location had always been
Kumbhalgarh's greatest
advantage. Because it was
virtually inaccessible in
the 15th century, Rana
Kumbha of Mewar built this
great defensive fortress on
a 3,500 feet (1,100 meters)
high hill overlooking the
approaches from Ajmer and
Marwar. Today, precisely
because it is within easy
reach of Udaipur, Jodhpur,
Ajmer, and Pushkar-yet off
the well trodden tourist
routes-Kumbhalgarh is an
attractive destination.
Kumbhalgarh - History
In Kumbha's time the kingdom
of Mewar spread from
Ranthambore to Gwalior,
including vast tracts of
present-day Rajasthan and
Madhya Pradesh. Mewar's
rulers became patrons of all
that was best in Indian
martial and fine arts,
architecture, and learning.
Of the 84 fortresses
defending Mewar, 32 were
designed and built by Rana
Kumbha. Of these,
Kumbhalgarh with its
36-kilometer long wall and
soaring towers is the most
impressive. Kumbhalgarh
stands on the site of an
ancient citadel dating back
to the second century AD
belonging to a Jain
descendant of India's
Mauryan emperors. It defined
the boundaries between Mewar
and Marwar and became a
refuge for Mewar's rulers in
times of strife. Its steel
gray ramparts encircle the
fertile Shero Mallah Valley,
with ancient monuments
cenotaphs, ponds and
flourishing farms.
Kumbhalgarh fell only once
in its history, to the
combined forces of Emperor
Akbar, Raja Man Singh of
Amber, and Raja Udai Singh
of Amber, and Raja Udai
Singh of Marwar.

History by Patrick Moon

MANVAR |
Located in the heart of the
sandune region of Rajasthan
between the ancient cities
of Jodhpur, Jaisalmer and
Bikaner. Manvar Resort is an
oasis in the desert -
designed as a desert village
settlement.
Converting barren land into
an oasis was not an easy
task. The local architecture
was studied at great length
before formulating a design
for Manvar. The vernacular
elements have been
contextualised so that they
can breathe & emit a
particular ambience. Care
has been taken to draw a
distinction between
imitation and inspiration
.Woven into this rustic
expression are technology
and services that offer
comfort levels expected by
the contemporary tourist.
The intention to make the
interiors warm and
comfortable in contrast to
the earthy and rugged
exteriors has led to a
boutique environment.
The Resort has most comforts
travellers wish for;
luxurious accommodation,
mouth watering cuisine, and
an exclusive swimming pool.
Throughout the resort the
atmosphere is relaxed and
enchanting. There is a
courtyard, a restaurant and
a bar that opens into a
market street. Beyond this
are the living quarters
called ANANDGRAM –an area
that has cottages, thatched
roof top sit outs, swimming
pool and massage rooms
overlooking a small
sanctuary.
Manvar mobile camping
provides an unsurpassed
experience of the desert of
Rajasthan .It is the ideal
method of travel for people
who enjoy close proximity to
the bush and wilderness and
want to experience the
desert of Rajasthan at first
hand but still want the
comforts of a large,
comfortable camp being
exclusively set up for them.
Although this is a real bush
safari we don’t skip on the
amenities. The camps are
designed for comfort
featuring airy two person
tents with proper cots &
bedding, hot showers and a
“bathroom ‘ tent. Enjoy the
star studded skies, gourmet
meals around a cozy campfire
and the sounds of the desert
of Rajasthan.

DEOGARH MAHAL |
As soon as you glimpse the
Deogarh Mahal, you can see
that its rulers must have
been major players in the
aristocracy of Mewar - their
magnificent fort a fitting
stronghold for one of the
sixteen "umraos" - the most
senior feudal barons
attending on the Maharana of
Udaipur. But you might not
necessarily guess that the
Rawats of Deogarh (a local
title equivalent to "Raja")
once ruled over the fourth
largest feudal estate or "jagir"
in all of Rajasthan. At its
most extensive, their
territory comprised of some
210 villages, with one of
their defensive forts as far
as 100 kms away. Yet there
is little ostentation and
even less gold to be found
in their palace. Like most
of the Mewar nobility, they
spent too much time fighting
to have much to spare for
amassing great wealth.
Deogarh's relationship with
Udaipur had its ups and
downs but it was probably
closer than most because it
was by family ties of
distant cousinship. Indeed,
if the Rawats' ancestor,
Prince Chunda had had a less
sense of pride, the throne
of Mewar might even have
been theirs...

SAM DESERTS: |
Rajasthan Sand Dunes :
One of the most unique
features of the desert state
of Rajasthan are the
majestic sand dunes. Unless
and until you visit the sand
dunes of Rajasthan, your
trip to the state will
remain incomplete. The sand
dunes are an accumulation of
the sand blown by the high
velocity winds of the
desert. Rising against the
blue sky of the desert,
these sand dunes offer a
picturesque site. The shape
and color of Rajasthan sand
dunes keeps on changing
every minute. Rajasthan,
India sand dunes also
provide a home to a unique
and wide variety of
wildlife. Another attraction
of these sand dunes are the
cultural activities
organized with the dunes
serving as the background.
The best way of viewing the
Thar Desert sand dunes of
Rajasthan is on a desert
safari, starting from
Jaisalmer. The desert safari
provides a window to the
rural Rajasthan. The period
of October to February is
the best for taking a desert
safari of the state. Amongst
the different desert
safaris, the best one is the
Camel safari. The main
locations where you can find
the sand dunes are:
Sam Sand Dunes :
Sam Sand Dunes are situated
at a distance of
approximately 42 km from the
city of Jaisalmer. Located
in the midst of the Thar
Desert, these sand dunes are
amongst the most famous ones
in Rajasthan. Radiating
laid-back vibes, Sam Sand
Dunes, near Jaisalmer,
Rajasthan totally enchant
you with their fascinating
sights. These 3km long, 1km
wide and almost half a
kilometer high sand dunes
keep on shifting on a
permanent basis. The area of
the Rajasthan Sam Sand Dunes
supports absolutely no plant
life. The whirling air
currents of this area match
with those of the sandstorms
in the Sahara.
The old ruins and the
various temples in this area
are a must see. The best way
to enjoy the Sam Sand Dunes
of Jaisalmer, Rajasthan is
through an overnight trip.
One of the most pleasurable
moments comes at the time of
the sunset. Watching the
sand dunes in the faint
orange glow of the sun with
the ballads of the legendary
lovers playing in the
background leaves you
completely speechless. The
night is spent sleeping in
the open under the cover of
the star-studded sky. One of
the major attractions of the
Rajasthan Sam Sand Dunes is
the desert festival that
takes place every year. Even
the desert comes alive with
the sound and light show,
and dance and music that are
organized there.
